The Client

A gift package worthy
of the occasion.
Old school, built right.

Soleta Golf Club came to us with a clear vision for their member guest: a gift package centered around a made in USA cutting knife and a cutting board. Not merchandise. A proper gift, the kind a member pulls out at home long after the round.

The ask was specific: build a cover for the knife. Something that protected it, secured it, and looked the part. The event had an old-school feel, and every material and color choice needed to honor that. No shortcuts, nothing off the shelf.

What started as a knife cover became a full presentation, wrapped in a custom burlap bag sized to carry the whole package together. The kind of thing that arrives and immediately tells you something was made for this moment.

The Brief
What we built
  • The chef's cover: a handmade leather knife cover, a first of its kind for iliac
  • Vegetable leather internal stabilizer for fit and structure
  • 15mm snap closure to secure the knife inside
  • Custom 20x16 burlap bag to house the full package
The standard
  • Three prototypes built at The Ranch in Texas before sign-off
  • Fit and stability tested through each iteration
  • Made in USA cutting knife, paired with a made in USA cover
  • Every component built to be used, not displayed
Why it fits
  • Old-school event feel drove every material and color decision
  • Vermont honey and tobacco brown embroidery against rich brown interior
  • A complete package: board, knife, cover, bag
  • The kind of gift that earns a permanent place in the kitchen

The Process

Three prototypes.
One right answer.

A knife cover sounds simple. It is not. Fit, stability, closure, material, presentation, all of it had to work together. We built it from scratch at The Ranch and did not stop until every version of the problem was solved.

01
The Brief
Soleta came to us with something we had never been asked to build before: a cover for a kitchen knife, to be gifted alongside a cutting board at their member guest. The item did not exist in our catalog. We would have to design and build it from zero, at The Ranch in Texas, and get it right before the event.
02
Prototyping at The Ranch
The first prototype established the basic form. The second addressed fit around the blade and handle. The third solved stability, using vegetable leather as an internal structure to hold the knife securely without movement. Three builds, three rounds of refinement. No version was signed off until the knife sat perfectly and the cover held its shape.
03
Materials and Detail
The event had an old-school character, and the materials had to match. Vermont honey and tobacco brown embroidery against a rich brown interior. A 15mm snap closure to keep the knife secure inside. Nothing chosen for novelty, everything chosen because it belonged. The cover looked like it had always existed alongside the knife.
04
The Complete Package
A knife cover alone is a detail. A knife cover inside a handmade burlap bag, alongside a cutting board, presented as a single object, is a gift. We built a custom 20x16 burlap bag to carry everything together. The cutting board, the made in USA knife in its chef's cover, wrapped and ready. The kind of package that gets unwrapped slowly.
